Nicole and Justin have been together for about a year and a half now and doing the long distance thing. They have been back and forth from Boston to Bermuda. They asked me to shoot their June wedding next year and also their engagement session. We decided on Whale Bay so we would have the beach and the fort as the back drop.
The day before the session, Justin’s sister called me unexpectedly and told me that Justin was going to “propose” during the shoot. Of course I was confused since they were already engaged and planning a wedding. Apparently, Justin had asked her to marry him already but had given her a promise ring and had another ring ordered. Nicole did not know about the other ring that was being specially made. I was so excited to hear this news because I have always wanted to capture the proposal, as someone had done for me when I got engaged (many eons ago). It is such a nice keepsake.
The day of the shoot was beautiful. I have to say I was a bit nervous about the coordinating of the proposal. Of course, Justin and I would not be able to communicate about it in front of Nicole. I had told his sister to tell him to do it at the beginning to get it out of the way. However, when we got down to the beach there were still a lot of people there and I did not feel it would be private enough so we went up to the fort first. At that point, I had no idea when he was going to do it. Well, long story short, Justin was also nervous and did not know when to do it. By the time we got down to the beach the sun was setting quickly. Then, the sun was down, the tide was coming up and he had still not asked her. I started to think maybe he changed his mind or the ring did not come in after all when he finally got down on one knee and asked, “Will you marry me, Nicole?”. Nicole was shocked and so overjoyed. Of course she said yes. It was a great moment! I felt very honored to be there. Congratulations you two!
